Tag Heuer patented the first ever chronograph mechanism in 1882. Since then, they have continued to push the limits of watchmaking, creating designs that are both beautiful and hihgly functional, leading to their slogan, “Swiss Avant-Garde since 1860”. In 1962, Heuer became the first Swiss watchmaker in space. John Glenn used a Heuer stopwatch when he flew the Mercury Atlas 6 on the United State's first manned orbit of the earth. This watch was the backup timepiece for the entire mission, and was set manually by Glen himself during the flight. You can still see this watch San Diego Air and Space Museum.
In the mid-1960's, Heuer was part of a group that intended to create the world's first automatic (self winding) chronograph. This effort was completed under a shroud of secrecy, since each group did not want to be copied. After some time, it was the Heuer-Brietling group that came out with the first marketable design.
